Indication

Ascites and distention in a robust patient accompanied by thirst, labored breathing, hard abdomen, constipation, scanty urine, and a submerged, rapid and forceful pulse.

Contraindication

1. Contraindicated during pregnancy and in those who are weak or debilitated. Traditional texts discourage the use of gan cao with this formula as several of the ingredients are incompatible. Because the formula contains several toxic ingredients, the dosage and duration of administration must be carefully regulated. After the acute condition has resolved, formulas that regulate and tonify the Spleen and Kidneys should be given to promote full recovery.
