Action / Indication

1. Clears heat, cools the blood, and stops bleeding: used to treat hemorrhagic fever, thrombocytopenic purpura, encephalitis B, high fever in infants and children, and throat infection with hemoptysis.
2. Clears heat and restores the Shen: used to treat ying or blood level heat with symptoms such as: unremitting high fever, loss of consciousness, convulsions, delirium, manic behavior, and schizophrenia.

Contraindication

This herb is cited for historical purposes only, as it belongs to an endangered species. Substitue with Shui Niu Jiao (Water Buffalo Horn) for epidemic diseases, and hemorrhagic fever. Substitute Huang Jiu Jao (Yellow Cow Horn) for lung and throat infections. Substitute Qing Niu Jiao Fen (Powdered Horn from Black Cows) for schizophrenia. These substitutions require a dosage of 20-40g. With any of the above, use extreme caution during pregnancy, and use only for severe excess conditions.
