Action / Indication

1. Induces vomiting to relieve phlegm-heat or retained food: for problems of accumulation above the diaphragm, when vomiting is the preferred treatment including phlegm-heat constrained in the chest manifesting as seizures, mania, painful obstruction of the throat, wheezing, irritability, and/or insomnia. Also used for retained food in the stomach with distention and pain of the chest and epigastrium.
2. Dispels damp-heat and relieves jaundice: for damp-heat jaundice when dampness predominates.

Drives upward to expel pathogenic influences; guides damp-heat out of the yang ming channel

Contraindication

Contraindicated during pregnancy and postpartum, in the debilitated, and in those with hematemesis or hemoptysis. Not for deficiency or no signs of excess. Large doses are toxic.
