Action / Indication

1. Release the exterior and dispels wind: for exterior patterns of either wind-cold or wind heat (depending on the herbs with which it is combined). Also for carbuncles or boils when they first erupt, especially when accompanied by chills and fever. 
2.  Vents rashed and alleviates itching: for the initial stage of measles and pruritic skin eruptions. 
3. Stops bleeding: as an auxiliary herb for hemorrhage, e.g. blood in the stool or uterine bleeding. Best used for charred for its action, as in Sophora Japonica Powder (huai hua san).

Contraindication

Liver wind patterns, and fully-erupted measles or open sores.

Dosages

3-9g. 30g, maximum. Add to decoctions in the last few minutes of cooking. Use raw for wind invasion without sweating, and dry-fried for wind invasion with sweating. Use charred to stop bleeding.
